Slash-and-burn rye is an ancient cereal crop that was brought to Sweden in the 16th century by the slash-and-burn practising Forest Finns, who sowed the seeds in the ashes of the burnt forest. It is a vigorous, tall-growing cereal that often reaches a height of two metres.
As Swidden Rye is usually sown around Midsummer, it has also been given the lovely name Midsummer rye.
